In a significant development for flood-prone areas of Limerick City, the Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), Mr. Patrick O’Donovan T.D., has announced the approval of tenders for the construction of the King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme. The project, set to commence later this summer, aims to provide protection from flooding to 528 homes and businesses in the region by the end of 2026.

The announcement, made today by Minister O’Donovan, was warmly welcomed by the Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Councillor Gerald Mitchell. Mayor Mitchell expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including Limerick City and County Council, the OPW, consultants, and others, in reaching this crucial stage of development. Reflecting on the devastating floods experienced by King’s Island a decade ago, Mayor Mitchell emphasized the importance of the project in safeguarding the community against future disasters.

Minister O’Donovan hailed the scheme as a testament to meticulous planning and dedication. He commended the efforts of all involved in bringing the project to fruition and underscored the importance of not only flood relief but also the provision of essential amenities and conservation works in the area. The Minister expressed anticipation for the commencement of works during the summer, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.

The King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme will complement existing flood protection measures in the city, building upon advance works completed in 2017. Minister O’Donovan highlighted the Government’s commitment to addressing flood risks, with funding provided through the National Development Plan. Moreover, Limerick City and County Council is set to contribute to the scheme by funding public realm upgrade elements, further enhancing the local community.

Vincent Murray, Director of Service, Planning, Environment, and Place-Making at Limerick City and County Council, emphasized the scheme’s importance in enhancing community resilience and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses in King’s Island. As extreme weather events become more frequent, Murray stressed the need for resilient flood protection measures to mitigate risks effectively.

The King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme represents a significant investment in Limerick’s infrastructure, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities and fostering sustainable development in the region.
