GP Joule Unveils Bold €200 Million Solar Project in County Meath

In a strategic move, GP Joule, the German energy giant operating through its Irish arm, has laid out plans for a cutting-edge 190MW solar energy farm in County Meath, Ireland. Titled the Blackhall Solar Farm, this venture could potentially stand as one of Ireland’s largest solar developments, boasting a hefty estimated price tag of €200 million, provided it secures planning approval.

The proposed solar farm aims to occupy an extensive 205-hectare site spread across three distinct land parcels. GP Joule has formally submitted the project’s planning documents to the Meath County Council, seeking a 10-year green light. Stressing the necessity of a 40-year lifespan in the submission, GP Joule is keen on ensuring ample funding for the initiative.

Should the nod of approval be granted, the Blackhall Solar Farm holds promise in generating renewable energy equivalent to powering roughly 30,000 Irish households. The project’s environmental impact is noteworthy, anticipated to curtail approximately 80,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

This announcement follows the heels of the successful completion of the 200MW Ballmacarney solar farm in County Meath by Norway’s Statkraft in 2021. Statkraft Ireland, actively involved in diverse solar and wind farm projects across the country, reflects the burgeoning momentum in Ireland’s renewable energy sector.

Ireland’s ambitious target of sourcing 80% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 is further bolstered by the Blackhall Solar Farm. Coming on the back of the recent Renewables Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) auction, where 20 solar farm projects securing support totaled 497MW, the project aligns with Ireland’s commitment to sustainable energy. Additional RESS auctions are slated for later this year.

GP Joule’s project marks a substantial leap toward fulfilling Ireland’s renewable energy objectives, exemplifying the nation’s dedication to a sustainable future. The Blackhall Solar Farm signifies the pivotal role solar power plays in steering Ireland toward a greener and more resilient energy landscape.
